A capacity, and taste, for reading gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others. (Abraham Lincoln).

With the end of the academic session upon us, I’d like to share a few summer reading suggestions. As your teenager struggles to not be bored, here are some ways to break the boredom.
The first two books are “self-help” books. Books that work with teen coaching to help your teen achieve the success that both you and your teen want.

“The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens” by Sean Covey. This book provides practical advice for teenagers on how to become more proactive, set goals, and develop positive habits. It teaches teenagers how to take control of their lives, build strong relationships, and achieve their full potential. The book is written in an engaging style, with relatable stories and examples that teenagers can relate to.

“The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work” by Shawn Achor. This book provides a practical guide for teenagers on how to cultivate happiness and well-being. It explains how positive psychology principles can help teenagers achieve success in all areas of their lives. This book can help teenagers develop a positive outlook, increase their resilience, and improve their overall quality of life. It also includes practical tips and exercises for teenagers to implement in their daily lives.

These next two books are fun reading that your teen may enjoy. The idea is to minimize the time on social media and to engage your teen’s mind and imagination.

“The Song of Achilles” by Madeline Miller – This novel is a retelling of the Greek myth of Achilles and Patroclus, exploring their relationship and the events leading up to the Trojan War. The novel is a blend of romance, adventure, and mythology, making it a perfect choice for a beach read.

“We Were Liars” by E. Lockhart – This suspenseful novel follows the story of a wealthy family, the Sinclairs, who spend their summers on a private island. The narrator, Cadence, suffers from memory loss and must uncover the secrets that her family is hiding. This novel is a quick and engaging read, perfect for a day at the beach.

Overall, the goal of summer reading for your teen is to provide them with a fun and enriching experience that helps them develop important life skills. Summer reading can help teenagers maintain their reading skills and prevent the loss of knowledge that often occurs during extended breaks from school. By reading over the summer, teenagers can enhance their vocabulary, improve their comprehension skills, and develop their critical thinking abilities.
Finally, summer reading can be a great way for teenagers to prepare for the upcoming school year. Reading books that align with their academic interests or required reading lists can help them get ahead and prepare for the challenges of the next academic term. Overall, summer reading provides a valuable opportunity for teenagers to learn, grow, and develop their reading skills, all while having fun and enjoying the long summer days.
